Individuals under 19 years of age must complete a state-approved driver education program. If you have already graduated high school or are 19 or older, please enroll in an adult-specific program.
Obtaining a Learner's Permit
You may obtain your entry-level learner permit to drive if you are at least 15 years of age and complete the following state steps:
- Schedule a learner permit appointment at a physical Utah Driver License Division (DLD) Office.
- Your photo will be taken, and you must pass a standard vision screening.
- Provide official proof of identity. View the state's comprehensive checklist for Required Documentation.
- A parent or legal guardian must sign for financial responsibility (for applicants 17 and under only).
- Pass the official written knowledge test.
If you are 15, 16, or 17 years old: The learner permit entitles you to operate a regular motor vehicle only when an approved certified driving instructor, a licensed parent, or a legal guardian is occupying the front passenger seat beside you. Be sure you review all state driving restrictions for this age group.
If you are 18 years old: The learner permit entitles you to operate a regular motor vehicle only if a licensed driver who is 21 years of age or older is occupying the seat directly beside you.
If you are 19 years or older: High school driver education is not required by the state. You must enroll in an adult-only training program.
Obtaining a Driver's License
Out-of-State Transfers:
Are you transferring your driver's ed credits from another state? Here is how it works at PCHS:
- Classroom Certificate: The Utah DLD will accept your out-of-state theory certificate as long as it proves you completed at least 30 hours of classroom or online instruction.
- Your Driving Hours: If you complete your practical driving hours with our program, Park City High School utilizes the online StreetSmarts simulator module to fulfill the state's 6th driving hour requirement.
- What you actually drive: Because this simulator module handles your 6th hour, your required in-car time with our instructors will consist of exactly 5 hours of behind-the-wheel driving and 6 hours of observation.
Drivers 16 and 17 Years of Age:
- Must pass the written knowledge test and apply for a learner's permit.
- Must hold the Utah learner permit for a minimum of 6 months before scheduling a road exam.
- Must successfully complete an approved driver education course (classroom theory + instructor drives).
- Must complete 40 hours of certified practice driving (including 10 hours at night).
- Must have a parent or legal guardian signature on the final application.
- Must pass the official driving skills road test.
Drivers 18 Years of Age (Still Enrolled in High School):
- Must pass the written knowledge test and apply for a learner permit (the 6-month holding rule does not apply).
- Must successfully complete an approved driver education course.
- Must pass the official driving skills road test.
